Silk-screening, also called screening or serigraphy, is a popular method for customizing T-shirts and other fabric items.  It is essentially a stenciling technique in which your design is cut out of paper or another thin, strong material and then printed by rubbing, rolling, or spraying paint or ink through the cut out areas.

Screen printing is a popular option because it looks great-- especially with multicolor images.  It has a classic look that people love, and it's possible to get a great deal of detail into your printed design.  The printed area of a silkscreen-printed t-shirt has a softer, more flexible feel than you get with vinyl heat transfer.  Silk-screening won't eventually crack or peel in the same way that some vinyl heat transfers do, after a lot of washing and wearing.  It tends to age very well.  Better yet, on bigger print runs, screen printing works out to cost less and process more quickly than vinyl heat transfer.
